Transition Asia recently hosted its first webinar on China’s aluminium decarbonisation, bringing together practitioners, experts and representatives from research institutions and civil society to explore the opportunities and challenges facing China’s aluminium sector under the country’s carbon market reform.

The closed-door webinar, “Under Carbon Market Reform: Challenges and Prospects for Decarbonising China’s Aluminium Industry,” featured three expert presentations and a panel discussion with six senior specialists. 

Participants broadly agreed that the current policy framework sets clear parameters for carbon reduction in the aluminium industry and will continue to drive decarbonisation in the years ahead. At the regional level, some provincial policy layouts are still catching up with national requirements on renewable energy consumption. As a result, companies are not yet able to realise the cost advantages of using green electricity. Several experts noted that alignment between provincial and national policies will take time, but expressed confidence that future reforms will strengthen mechanism design, improve coherence and enhance transparency, ultimately enabling genuine market-based pricing and competitiveness for green electricity and green aluminium.
